A lot of people felt that the DeBartolos, because they were in Youngstown, didn’t have that much to do with or care about the Penguins. That was very much untrue. I talked daily with Mr. DeBartolo. When we had a bad game, I would hear about it very early in the morning the next day.

PAUL MARTHA
Former president of the Penguins describing the ownership of Edward DeBartolo Sr.
• A group of 21 owners invested $2 million to get the Penguins started in 1967. General manager Jack Riley remembered a request being made to hold the check a few extra days, just so more interest could be collected.

• George Steinbrenner once had an interest in buying the Penguins. So did the famous singer Andy Williams.
